What is “Intra-Company Transferee” VISA?
Intra-Company Transferee Visa is for applicants (foreigners) who are now working for an organization outside Japan and will be transferred to group company (subsidiary, branch etc) located in Japan. Activities has to be “Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International services”.
For example, it’s the case that staff working for foreign company now is transferred to its subsidiary in Japan.
Term of stay is 5 years, 3 years, 1 year or 3 months.
Activities is limited as above, simple labor is not accepted. And term of transfer to Japan should be limited and fixed on the contract (ex. for 2 years)
Requirements for obtaining “Intra-company Transferee” VISA
Also, applicants need to satisfy the following two requirements for obtaining “Intra-Company Tranferee” VISA.
These two requirements are called as “Landing permission criteria”.
- Applicants have been engaged in the activities which is covered by “Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International services” in that foreign company, for at least 1 year immediately before transfer to Japan
- Applicants need to receive salary (after transfer to Japan) at the same level or more than that of which Japanese would receive if he/she should be engaged in same work. (The amount is not shown in the act, but practically it should be JPY200,000 / month or more.)
Number of person who can apply for transferee VISA is not limited.
Also, the person who does not have Bachelor degree can also apply for this transferee VISA, since there is no requirement for academic background.
Definition of “Transfer”
“Transfer” includes not only internal transfer but also transfer to group company (Parent company, Subsidiary, Affiliated company).
To explain further, this means “Parent company” “Subsidiary” and “Affiliated company” which are defined by Article 8 of Zaimu Shohyoukisoku (財務諸表規則).
I will leave out the explanation of the article here, but Transfer includes only 100% group but also other group such as affiliated company. For example, if company A holds 30% of shares for company B (Japan), company B would be “Affiliated company”, so transfer of employee from A to B would meet the conditions for “Intra-Company transferee” VISA.
Also, transfer from foreign company to Japan branch is included in “Transfer”.
But, just business partnership (no capital relationship) does not fall under “Transfer”.

Main point to obtain “Intra-Company Transferee” VISA（Important）
Followings are main points to obtain “Intra-Company Transferee” IVSA.
- Applicant’s activities has to be covered by “Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International services” (Simple work such as administration will not be accepted)
- Applicant needs to have been worked for the foreign company for at least 1 year（New joiner will not be accepted）
- Applicants need to receive salary (after transfer to Japan) at the same level or more than that of which Japanese would receive if he/she should be engaged in same work. (The amount is not shown in the act, but practically it should be JPY200,000 / month or more.)
- Applicant’s work should not be “Business Manager”. (If so, the applicants need to apply for “Business Manager” VISA)
- Term of transfer has to be shown in the contract with employee (ex. secondment agreement)
- Submission of tenancy agreement is not required, but it’s better to prepare in advance, since sometimes it’s requested from immigration Bureau
Work flow
- Meeting to decide which type of VISA is appropriate for each applicant
- We prepare quotation
- Customer sends back the signed quotation to us
- We send the information request sheet
- Customer fills out the information request sheet and collect necessary document
- We prepare the application form and attachments
- Customer reviews the application form and attachments
- We submit the application form and attachments to Immigration Bureau
- We prepare the additional documents (if immigration requests)

Application for Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for Resident Status（Intra-Company Transferee VISA）
- Category 1・2 → JPY80,000＋tax / person
- Category 3・4 → JPY160,000＋tax / person
※Dependent pass is also needed, we can also support of it. Fee would be JPY20,000 +tax / person. Actual expense cost (stamp duty, mail etc.) will be separately charged.
Category 1Big company such as Listed company in Japan, Mutual insurance company etc.
Category 2 Company whose total withholding tax for employment income of previous year was JPY15,000,000 or more
Category 3 Company whose total withholding tax for employment income of previous year was less than JPY15,000,000
Category 4 Other than above 1, 2 and 3 (New incorporated company etc.)
